Chicken Panic – An 8-Bit Action Adventure for the NES

Chicken Panic is a handcrafted retro action adventure, fully written in assembler, inspired by classic 8-bit games of the mid to late 1980s. Built from the ground up with old-school design principles, it blends platforming, exploration, and light Metroidvania elements into a compact but richly detailed world.

You play as a chicken exploring a mysterious, interconnected map made up of more than 200 individual screens. The world spans underground caves, dark passages, lava caverns, and areas high above the clouds. Progress is not just about reflexes, but about understanding the world, collecting the right items, and rescuing fellow chickens.

As you advance, you’ll unlock skills such as breaking blocks, jumping higher, or flying horizontally — each one opening up new paths and secrets. Maps, compasses, keys, torches, and orbs are essential tools, encouraging careful exploration rather than linear progression.

Under the hood, Chicken Panic is a love letter to classic hardware limitations. Everything is built with strict memory constraints in mind, resulting in a tightly optimized experience where every detail matters, just like in the golden age of 8-bit gaming.

Whether you’re here for nostalgia, challenge, or curiosity about how classic games were made, Chicken Panic aims to capture the feeling of discovering a new cartridge, flipping through the manual, and venturing into a strange little world for the first time.
